A vulnerability was found in F5 NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source (version now known) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function ngx_http_charset_module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source have a vulnerability in the ngx_http_charset_module module. When charset, source_charset, and charset_map and proxy_pass with disabled buffering ("off") directives are configured, unauthenticated attackers can send requests that with conditions beyond the attackers' control to cause a heap buffer over-read in the NGINX worker process, leading to limited disclosure of memory or a restart. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.
The weakness was released by David Carlier and Zhenpeng as K000161028. It is possible to read the advisory at my.f5.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-42934 since 05/01/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
