F5 NGINX Plus/NGINX Open Source ngx_http_charset_module out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in F5 NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source (version now known) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function ngx_http_charset_module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source have a vulnerability in the ngx_http_charset_module module. When charset, source_charset, and charset_map and proxy_pass with disabled buffering ("off") directives are configured, unauthenticated attackers can send requests that with conditions beyond the attackers' control to cause a heap buffer over-read in the NGINX worker process, leading to limited disclosure of memory or a restart.  Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.

The weakness was released by David Carlier and Zhenpeng as K000161028. It is possible to read the advisory at my.f5.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-42934 since 05/01/2026.
