Details
A vulnerability was found in protobufjs protobuf.js up to 7.5.5/8.0.1. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a prototype pollution vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-1321. The product receives input from an upstream component that specifies attributes that are to be initialized or updated in an object, but it does not properly control modifications of attributes of the object prototype. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
protobufjs compiles protobuf definitions into JavaScript (JS) functions. Prior to 7.5.6 and 8.0.2, protobufjs allowed certain schema option paths to traverse through inherited object properties while applying options. A crafted protobuf schema or JSON descriptor could cause option handling to write to properties on global JavaScript constructors, corrupting process-wide built-in functionality. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.5.6 and 8.0.2.
The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-44290 since 05/05/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
