Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Netty up to 4.1.133.Final/4.2.13.Final. Affected by this issue is the function newInitialMessage. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a response splitting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-113. The product receives data from an HTTP agent/component (e.g., web server, proxy, browser, etc.), but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes CR and LF characters before the data is included in outgoing HTTP headers. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:
Netty is an asynchronous, event-driven network application framework. Prior to 4.2.13.Final and 4.1.133.Final, Netty's HttpProxyHandler constructs HTTP CONNECT requests with header validation explicitly disabled. The newInitialMessage() method creates headers using DefaultHttpHeadersFactory.headersFactory().withValidation(false), then adds user-provided outboundHeaders without any CRLF validation. This allows an attacker who can influence the outbound headers to inject arbitrary HTTP headers into the CONNECT request sent to the proxy server. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.2.13.Final and 4.1.133.Final.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-42578 since 04/28/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
