Unspecified vulnerability in Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and JDK 6 Update 4 and earlier, 5.0 Update 14 and earlier, and SDK/JRE 1.4.2_16 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (JRE crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors related to XSLT transforms.
The bug was discovered 03/04/2008. The weakness was disclosed 03/05/2008 by Hisashi Kojima with ZDI (Website). The advisory is shared at java.sun.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-1187 since 03/06/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40722 (RHEL 3 / 4 / 5 : java-1.4.2-ibm (RHSA-2008:0555)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165677 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Sun Java (SUSE-SA:2008:018)).
Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at java.sun.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5622.
