Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in ninenines cowlib up to 2.16.0. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a data amplification vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-409. The product does not handle or incorrectly handles a compressed input with a very high compression ratio that produces a large output. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Improper Handling of Highly Compressed Data (Data Amplification) vulnerability in ninenines cowlib allows unauthenticated remote denial of service via memory exhaustion. cow_spdy:inflate/2 in cowlib passes peer-supplied compressed bytes directly to zlib:inflate/2 with no output size bound. The SPDY header compression dictionary (?ZDICT) is public, and zlib compresses long runs of repeated bytes at roughly 1024:1, so a few kilobytes of SPDY frame payload can decompress to gigabytes on the BEAM heap, OOM-killing the node. A single unauthenticated SPDY frame is sufficient to trigger the condition. The parsers for syn_stream, syn_reply, and headers frame types are all affected via cow_spdy:parse_headers/2. This issue affects cowlib from 0.1.0 before 2.16.1.
The weakness was published by Peter Ullrich. The advisory is available at cna.erlef.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-43970 since 05/04/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Upgrading to version 2.16.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 16aad3fb9f81f5cda4d1706ff0c54237c619c282 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
