Details
A vulnerability has been found in PostgreSQL up to 14.22/15.17/16.13/17.9/18.3 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function lo_export/lo_read/lo_lseek64/lo_tell64 of the component libpq. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use of inherently dangerous function vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-242. The product calls a function that can never be guaranteed to work safely. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Use of inherently dangerous function PQfn(..., result_is_int=0, ...) in PostgreSQL libpq lo_export(), lo_read(), lo_lseek64(), and lo_tell64() functions allows the server superuser to overwrite a client stack buffer with an arbitrarily-large response. Like gets(), PQfn(..., result_is_int=0, ...) stores arbitrary-length, server-determined data into a buffer of unspecified size. Because both the \lo_export command in psql and pg_dump call lo_read(), the server superuser can overwrite pg_dump or psql stack memory. Versions before PostgreSQL 18.4, 17.10, 16.14, 15.18, and 14.23 are affected.
The advisory is available at postgresql.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-6477 since 04/17/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 315292 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : postgresql18 (SUSE-SU-2026:1946-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 14.23, 15.18, 16.14, 17.10 or 18.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (315292) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1544). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
