Details
A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL up to 14.22/15.17/16.13/17.9/18.3. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component AF_UNIX Socket. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a recursion vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-674. The product does not properly control the amount of recursion that takes place, consuming excessive resources, such as allocated memory or the program stack. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Uncontrolled recursion in PostgreSQL SSL and GSS negotiation allows an attacker able to connect to a PostgreSQL AF_UNIX socket to achieve sustained denial of service. If SSL and GSS are both disabled, an attacker can do the same via access to a PostgreSQL TCP socket. Versions before PostgreSQL 18.4, 17.10, 16.14, 15.18, and 14.23 are affected.
The advisory is shared for download at postgresql.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-6479 since 04/17/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 315292 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : postgresql18 (SUSE-SU-2026:1946-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 14.23, 15.18, 16.14, 17.10 or 18.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (315292) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1544). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
