squinky86 STIGQter up to 1.2.6 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in squinky86 STIGQter up to 1.2.6. This impacts an unknown function. The manipulation results in path traversal. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-42881. Attacking locally is a requirement. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in squinky86 STIGQter up to 1.2.6. Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

STIGQter is an open-source reimplementation of DISA's STIG Viewer. From 0.1.2 to before 1.2.7, an attacker can achieve local code execution (LCE) with the privileges of the user running STIGQter. This requires user interaction: the victim must open the malicious .stigqter file and explicitly run the "Export HTML" action. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.2.7.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-42881 since 04/30/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

Upgrading to version 1.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability.
