Details
A vulnerability was found in open-webui Open WebUI up to 0.8.x and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function _process_picture_url of the file backend/open_webui/utils/oauth.py of the component HTTP Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a server-side request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Open WebUI is a self-hosted artificial intelligence platform designed to operate entirely offline. Prior to 0.9.0, a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability exists in _process_picture_url() in backend/open_webui/utils/oauth.py (line ~1338). The function fetches arbitrary URLs from OAuth picture claims without applying validate_url(), allowing an attacker to force the server to make HTTP requests to internal resources and exfiltrate the full response. This vulnerability is fixed in 0.9.0.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-45338 since 05/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 0.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
