NetBSD opencrypto Subsystem cryptodev_op double free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in NetBSD and classified as problematic. This impacts the function cryptodev_op of the component opencrypto Subsystem. The manipulation results in double free. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2026-32848. The attack must be initiated from a local position. There is no exploit available. It is best practice to apply a patch to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in NetBSD (the affected version is unknown). Affected is the function cryptodev_op of the component opencrypto Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

NetBSD prior to commit ec8451e contains a race condition vulnerability in cryptodev_op() within the opencrypto subsystem that allows local attackers to trigger a double-free condition by concurrently issuing CIOCCRYPT operations on the same session identifier on SMP systems. Attackers can exploit mutable per-operation state embedded in the csession struct to corrupt kernel heap memory.

The advisory is available at nasm.re. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-32848 since 03/16/2026. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/18/2026).

Applying the patch ec8451efc1565516aba9e7047e1a1a1ce7953a2f is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
