Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in RsyncProject rsync up to 3.4.2. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Rsync version 3.4.2 and prior contain an integer overflow vulnerability in the compressed-token decoder where a 32-bit signed counter is not checked for overflow, allowing a malicious sender to trigger an overflow that causes the receiver process to read and return data from outside the intended buffer bounds. Attackers can exploit this vulnerability to disclose process memory contents including environment variables, passwords, heap and stack data, and library memory pointers, significantly reducing ASLR effectiveness and facilitating further exploitation.
The weakness was disclosed by Omar Elsayed as GHSA-g37v-g3gj-pmwq. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-43618 since 05/01/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 315780 (Debian dla-4591 : rsync - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 3.4.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at CNNVD (CNNVD-202605-4469), Tenable (315780) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1611). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
