RsyncProject rsync up to 3.4.2 Exported Rsync toctou

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in RsyncProject rsync up to 3.4.2. Affected is some unknown processing of the component Exported Rsync Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a toctou vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-367. The product checks the state of a resource before using that resource, but the resource's state can change between the check and the use in a way that invalidates the results of the check. This can cause the product to perform invalid actions when the resource is in an unexpected state. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Rsync version 3.4.2 and prior contain symlink race condition vulnerabilities in path-based system calls including chmod, lchown, utimes, rename, unlink, mkdir, symlink, mknod, link, rmdir, and lstat that allow local attackers to redirect operations to files outside the exported rsync module. Attackers with local filesystem access can exploit the timing window between path resolution and syscall execution by swapping symlinks to apply sender-supplied permissions, ownership, timestamps, or filenames to arbitrary files outside the intended module boundary on rsync daemons configured with 'use chroot = no'.

The weakness was presented by Andrew Tridgell as GHSA-4h9m-w5ff-j735. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-43619 since 05/01/2026. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 315780 (Debian dla-4591 : rsync - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.4.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at CNNVD (CNNVD-202605-4468), Tenable (315780) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1611). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
