AFFLIB 2.2.0 lib/s3.cpp stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in AFFLIB 2.2.0. The impacted element is an unknown function in the library lib/s3.cpp of the file lib/s3.cpp. Performing a manipulation results in stack-based overflow. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2053. There is no available exploit. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in AFFLIB 2.2.0. It has been classified as very critical. This affects some unknown processing in the library lib/s3.cpp of the file lib/s3.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in AFFLIB before 2.2.6 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via (1) a long LastModified value in an S3 XML response in lib/s3.cpp; (2) a long (a) path or (b) bucket in an S3 URL in lib/vnode_s3.cpp; or (3) a long (c) EFW, (d) AFD, or (c) aimage file path. NOTE: the aimage vector (3c) has since been recalled from the researcher s original advisory, since the code is not called in any version of AFFLIB.

The weakness was presented 04/27/2007 by Timothy D. Morgan (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vsecurity.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-2053 since 04/16/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/23/2017).

Upgrading to version 2.2.6 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33961), SecurityFocus (BID 23695†) and OSVDB (35613†). See VDB-85561 and VDB-85562 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
