SUSE Linux Enterprise/openSUSE up to 17.38.8 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE up to 17.38.8 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-35. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize '.../...//' (doubled triple dot slash) sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

`PluginScript` attempts to `chroot` the plugin to the `repoManagerRoot`, this root is frequently `/` (the system root) in standard configurations or when using `--root`. If the chroot target is `/`, it is a no-op, allowing the traversed path to execute host binaries (like `/bin/bash`) with root privileges.

The weakness was released by Dirk Mueller. The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.suse.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-44933 since 05/08/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/26/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 316567 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-44933), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 17.38.9 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (316567). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
