Details
A vulnerability was found in Don Moore MyDNS 1.1.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file update.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in MyDNS 1.1.0 allow remote attackers to (1) cause a denial of service (daemon crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a certain update, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow in update.c; and (2) cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via unspecified vectors that trigger an off-by-one stack-based buffer overflow in update.c.
The bug was discovered 04/27/2007. The weakness was published 04/27/2007 by DiGiT with digit-labs.org (Website). The advisory is shared for download at digit-labs.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-2362 since 04/30/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29707 (Debian DSA-1434-1 : mydns - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33933), Exploit-DB (3807), Tenable (29707), SecurityFocus (BID 23694†) and OSVDB (35438†). Similar entry is available at VDB-85545. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
