Details
A vulnerability was found in WineHQ Wine up to 11.0. It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component MIME Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource transfer vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-669. The product does not properly transfer a resource/behavior to another sphere, or improperly imports a resource/behavior from another sphere, in a manner that provides unintended control over that resource. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Wine ships a .desktop file that registers itself as a MIME handler for EXE files and several other Windows executable file types. In some configurations, handling of an EXE file causes that file to be blindly executed with the permissions of the invoker. This allows escaping Flatpak and Snap sandboxes, because MIME handlers are not intended for use by code interpreters and loaders. NOTE: some parties feel that this is not a bug to be addressed in Wine, because there is no known solution that avoids a severe loss of usability (Wine could be a binfmt-misc handler, but binfmt-misc does not exist on all platforms supported by Wine).
The advisory is shared at bugs.winehq.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-48831 since 05/24/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 316603 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-48831), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (316603) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-31599). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
