Details
A vulnerability was found in rust-lang Cargo up to 1.95.x. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use of non-canonical url paths for authorization decisions vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-647. The product defines policy namespaces and makes authorization decisions based on the assumption that a URL is canonical. This can allow a non-canonical URL to bypass the authorization. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Cargo between 1.68 and 1.96 incorrectly normalized the URLs of third-party registries using the sparse index protocol. If a hosting provider allowed multiple registries to be hosted with arbitrary names within the same domain, an attacker able to publish crates in a registry could obtain the credentials of others users of the same registry. The severity of the vulnerability is **low**, due to the extremely niche requirements needed to achieve the attack.
The advisory is shared at groups.google.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-5222 since 03/31/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
