Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in OpenStack Swift up to 2.36.1/2.37.1. This vulnerability affects the function StreamingInput. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In OpenStack Swift before 2.36.2 and 2.37.2, s3api middleware enters an infinite loop when processing a truncated aws-chunked PUT request body. The StreamingInput class repeatedly appends an empty buffer and re-reads, causing the proxy-server worker handling the request to become permanently unresponsive with increasing CPU and memory consumption. An authenticated attacker can systematically exhaust all proxy-server workers, resulting in denial of service. The defect was introduced in Swift 2.36.0.
The advisory is shared for download at bugs.launchpad.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-49017 since 05/27/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 318110 (Debian dsa-6314 : python3-swift - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 2.36.2 or 2.37.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at CNNVD (CNNVD-202605-6099), Tenable (318110) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-32040). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
