It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.74/6.18.13/6.19.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function aa_get_buffer of the component apparmor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: apparmor: avoid per-cpu hold underflow in aa_get_buffer When aa_get_buffer() pulls from the per-cpu list it unconditionally decrements cache->hold. If hold reaches 0 while count is still non-zero, the unsigned decrement wraps to UINT_MAX. This keeps hold non-zero for a very long time, so aa_put_buffer() never returns buffers to the global list, which can starve other CPUs and force repeated kmalloc(aa_g_path_max) allocations. Guard the decrement so hold never underflows.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-45884 since 05/13/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 06/26/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.75, 6.18.14 or 6.19.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 202824a1f89a9786c20a3d646a7c88d223abb1b2/80c334acc6d0bee8605a358a33e69b4aea1ffb92/4bcddd0f6b2e52b4c7b520e4d36a115caf5b7169/640cf2f09575c9dc344b3f7be2498d31e3923ead is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1700). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
