Linux Kernel up to 6.12.74/6.18.13/6.19.3 ntfs3 longest_match_std uninitialized pointer

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.74/6.18.13/6.19.3. This affects the function longest_match_std of the component ntfs3. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized pointer vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-824. The product accesses or uses a pointer that has not been initialized. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/ntfs3: Initialize new folios before use KMSAN reports an uninitialized value in longest_match_std(), invoked from ntfs_compress_write(). When new folios are allocated without being marked uptodate and ni_read_frame() is skipped because the caller expects the frame to be completely overwritten, some reserved folios may remain only partially filled, leaving the rest memory uninitialized.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-71311 since 05/27/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 318411 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-71311), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.75, 6.18.14 or 6.19.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch dd6c81527d097b3b0bf5a15c2fdc9657d045144c/5a30cc03bde169ad558695b26da6ea7e55f6194a/41d79f8e2a36622d148719bf7c18b46ac1264284/f223ebffa185cc8da934333c5a31ff2d4f992dc9 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (318411) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1700). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
