Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.13/6.19.3. Affected by this issue is the function mptcp_rcvbuf_grow. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mptcp: do not account for OoO in mptcp_rcvbuf_grow() MPTCP-level OoOs are physiological when multiple subflows are active concurrently and will not cause retransmissions nor are caused by drops. Accounting for them in mptcp_rcvbuf_grow() causes the rcvbuf slowly drifting towards tcp_rmem[2]. Remove such accounting. Note that subflows will still account for TCP-level OoO when the MPTCP-level rcvbuf is propagated. This also closes a subtle and very unlikely race condition with rcvspace init; active sockets with user-space holding the msk-level socket lock, could complete such initialization in the receive callback, after that the first OoO data reaches the rcvbuf and potentially triggering a divide by zero Oops.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-45889 since 05/13/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 6.18.14 or 6.19.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fb7bf00b04a6b48859f52035d4e745848c2b4c79/400ee4854adef1e4983812a3decf6717ea020136/6b329393502e5857662b851a13f947209c588587 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1700). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
