Linux Kernel up to 7.0.3 memfd_luo_retrieve_folios infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.3. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function memfd_luo_retrieve_folios. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/memfd_luo: fix physical address conversion in put_folios cleanup In memfd_luo_retrieve_folios()'s put_folios cleanup path: 1. kho_restore_folio() expects a phys_addr_t (physical address) but receives a raw PFN (pfolio->pfn). This causes kho_restore_page() to check the wrong physical address (pfn << PAGE_SHIFT instead of the actual physical address). 2. This loop lacks the !pfolio->pfn check that exists in the main retrieval loop and memfd_luo_discard_folios(), which could incorrectly process sparse file holes where pfn=0. Fix by converting PFN to physical address with PFN_PHYS() and adding the !pfolio->pfn check, matching the pattern used elsewhere in this file.
