Details
A vulnerability was found in Free5GC up to 4.2.1. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file /npcf-policyauthorization/v1/app-sessions. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
free5GC is an open-source implementation of the 5G core network. Prior to 4.2.2, free5GC's PCF POST /npcf-policyauthorization/v1/app-sessions handler panics on a single authenticated request whose ascReqData.suppFeat == "1" (enabling traffic-routing feature negotiation) and whose medComponents entries supply an afAppId but NO AfRoutReq. The create path then calls provisioningOfTrafficRoutingInfo(smPolicy, appID, routeReq, ...) with routeReq == nil and dereferences routeReq.RouteToLocs (and other fields) without a nil check, causing runtime error: invalid memory address or nil pointer dereference. Gin recovery converts the panic into HTTP 500. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.2.2.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-44317 since 05/05/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 4.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
