Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.31/7.0.8. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component spi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: spi: ch341: fix devres lifetime USB drivers bind to USB interfaces and any device managed resources should have their lifetime tied to the interface rather than parent USB device. This avoids issues like memory leaks when drivers are unbound without their devices being physically disconnected (e.g. on probe deferral or configuration changes). Fix the controller and driver data lifetime so that they are released on driver unbind. Note that this also makes sure that the SPI controller is placed correctly under the USB interface in the device tree.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-46228 since 05/13/2026. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
Upgrading to version 6.18.32, 7.0.9 or 7.1-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4422fc2411cbbdf5104a914e0596bb483faea254/108a64b27a52f781c4f3751641e3dd65c7dd2fb5/abe572f630bc1f0e77041012ab075869036ede4f is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
