Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.139/6.12.87/6.18.29/7.0.6/7.1-rc2 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function new_sta of the component wifi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: mac80211: remove station if connection prep fails If connection preparation fails for MLO connections, then the interface is completely reset to non-MLD. In this case, we must not keep the station since it's related to the link of the vif being removed. Delete an existing station. Any "new_sta" is already being removed, so that doesn't need changes. This fixes a use-after-free/double-free in debugfs if that's enabled, because a vif going from MLD (and to MLD, but that's not relevant here) recreates its entire debugfs.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-46125 since 05/13/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/21/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 321269 (RHEL 8 : kernel-rt (RHSA-2026:26428)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.140, 6.12.88, 6.18.30, 7.0.7 or 7.1-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fe75fa1ac9a92990f7fc3d34b17808fd933071b2/afcbaed89cdc1a001b43270cbf5394bb4804270a/9e28654f79f443bca9b29ff3ae7cf18abfba58a0/1c2b72ea89882aeb948340498391e69c58d466f1/283fc9e44ff5b5ac967439b4951b80bd4299f4e4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
