Linux Kernel up to 7.1-rc2 KVM translate_nested_gpa privilege escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.139/6.12.87/6.18.29/7.0.6/7.1-rc2. This affects the function translate_nested_gpa of the component KVM. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: x86: check for nEPT/nNPT in slow flush hypercalls Checking is_guest_mode(vcpu) is incorrect, because translate_nested_gpa() is only valid if an L2 guest is running *with nested EPT/NPT enabled*. Instead use the same condition as translate_nested_gpa() itself.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-46131 since 05/13/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.140, 6.12.88, 6.18.30, 7.0.7 or 7.1-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 971f17f5d91045404e3914029ea57c3da90179a4/45fc766bc756ff1d66f8ca026a9c4f7f764adfae/d6f4e217d663ede5becc2fd6cb612c749677387b/4c7f8436b19a2a3acc0cb6b6e3becd6796ae5c57/464af6fc2b1dcc74005b7f58ee3812b17777efee is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
