Linux Kernel up to 7.1-rc2 smb symlink_data

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.139/6.12.87/6.18.29/7.0.6/7.1-rc2. Affected by this issue is the function symlink_data of the component smb. This manipulation causes symlink. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-46185. No exploit exists. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.139/6.12.87/6.18.29/7.0.6/7.1-rc2. Affected by this vulnerability is the function symlink_data of the component smb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb/client: fix out-of-bounds read in symlink_data() Since smb2_check_message() returns success without length validation for the symlink error response, in symlink_data() it is possible for iov->iov_len to be smaller than sizeof(struct smb2_err_rsp). If the buffer only contains the base SMB2 header (64 bytes), accessing err->ErrorContextCount (at offset 66) or err->ByteCount later in symlink_data() will cause an out-of-bounds read.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-46185 since 05/13/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/08/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 325425 (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS : Linux kernel (NVIDIA) vulnerabilities (USN-8508-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.6.140, 6.12.88, 6.18.30, 7.0.7 or 7.1-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ef6495d4df6e7af8f3de67e65150881c880f696c/15dc0a4de743a1aaa7b859b3aea79f08c695396c/b8c8a704f0bc133deb171f6aeb6f3a684203e212/b9561402489d41149f63e001a74384863b7b30a6/d62b8d236fab503c6fec1d3e9a38bea71feaca20 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (325425) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-32812). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
