A vulnerability was found in Sun Java JRE and SDK 1.4.x on Linux (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as problematic. Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Software Development Kit (SDK) 1.4.2 through 1.4.2_02 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on (1) unpack.log, as created by the unpack program, or (2) .mailcap1 and .mime.types1, as created by the RPM program.
The bug was discovered 10/31/2003. The weakness was disclosed 10/31/2003 by Stan Bubrouski as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-1156 since 05/04/2005. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
