A vulnerability was found in McAfee VirusScan 10.0.27/2004/2005 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function isoldappinstalled in the library mcsubmgr.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the IsOldAppInstalled function in the McSubMgr.McSubMgr Subscription Manager ActiveX control (MCSUBMGR.DLL) in McAfee SecurityCenter before 6.0.25 and 7.x before 7.2.147 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted argument.
The weakness was released 05/08/2007 by Peter Vreugdenhil (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-2584 since 05/09/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Jambalaya in ANSI C and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version 6.0.25 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4696.
