Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in juliangruber brace-expansion up to 5.0.5. Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The brace-expansion library generates arbitrary strings containing a common prefix and suffix. From 5.0.0 to before 5.0.6, the max option was being applied too late. When expanding a single large numeric range like {1..10000000}, the sequence generation loop generates all 10 million intermediate elements before the max limit is applied With max=10, the output is correctly limited to 10 items, but the process still allocates ~505 MB and spends ~800ms building the full intermediate array. This vulnerability is fixed in 5.0.6.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-45149 since 05/08/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
Upgrading to version 5.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at EUVD (EUVD-2026-33442) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-2118). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
