Summary
A vulnerability was found in open-telemetry opentelemetry-ebpf-instrumentation up to 0.8.x. It has been classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function bpf_probe_read of the component Kernel Memory Handler. Performing a manipulation results in buffer under-read.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-45683. Attacking locally is a requirement. No exploit is available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in open-telemetry opentelemetry-ebpf-instrumentation up to 0.8.x. This affects the function bpf_probe_read of the component Kernel Memory Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer under-read vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-127. The product reads from a buffer using buffer access mechanisms such as indexes or pointers that reference memory locations prior to the targeted buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation provides eBPF instrumentation based on the OpenTelemetry standard. Prior to version 0.9.0, the Java TLS ioctl probe reads user-controlled ioctl pointers with bpf_probe_read instead of bpf_probe_read_user. An instrumented local process can therefore point OBI at kernel memory and cause that memory to be copied into telemetry. This issue has been patched in version 0.9.0.
It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-45683 since 05/12/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 0.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.
