A vulnerability was found in Symantec Norton Personal Firewall 2004 (Firewall Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function Get in the library islalert.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the ISAlertDataCOM ActiveX control in ISLALERT.DLL for Norton Personal Firewall 2004 and Internet Security 2004 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via long arguments to the (1) Get and (2) Set functions.
The bug was discovered 05/16/2007. The weakness was shared 05/16/2007 by Will Dormann with CERT as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-1689 since 03/26/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/09/2025).
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 34055 (Symantec Norton Personal Firewall 2004 ActiveX Control Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
