Adobe Photoshop 3.2 BMP Image memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Adobe Photoshop 3.2 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component BMP Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2, and possibly After Effects CS3, allows user-assisted remote attackers and physically proximate attackers to execute arbitrary code via a BMP file with an invalid image header. NOTE: the related issue in Photoshop CS3 is already covered by CVE-2007-2244.

The bug was discovered 04/21/2008. The weakness was presented 04/22/2008 by Scott Laurie (c0ntex) (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1765 since 04/12/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by c0ntex and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 13865. In this case the pattern BM is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6225.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41941), Exploit-DB (5479), SecurityFocus (BID 28874†), OSVDB (44579†) and Secunia (SA29838†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
