Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in X.org X11 Server (affected version unknown). Affected by this issue is the function _XkbSetMapChecks. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A stack-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the X.Org X server and Xwayland. _XkbSetMapChecks() declares a fixed-size stack buffer mapWidths[256] indexed by key type index. The helper function CheckKeyTypes() writes to this buffer at a client-controlled offset, allowing a stack buffer overflow. This may be used to crash the server, or for privilege escalation if the X server runs as root.
The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-50259 since 06/04/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
