PEAR up to 1.5.3 Installation path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in PEAR up to 1.5.3 and classified as problematic. The affected element is an unknown function of the component Installation. Executing a manipulation can lead to path traversal. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2007-2519. Moreover, an exploit is present. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in PEAR up to 1.5.3 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Installation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the installer in PEAR 1.0 through 1.5.3 allows user-assisted remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) sequence in the (1) install-as attribute in the file element in package.xml 1.0 or the (2) as attribute in the install element in package.xml 2.0. NOTE: it could be argued that this does not cross privilege boundaries in typical installations, since the code being installed could perform the same actions.

The bug was discovered 05/07/2007. The weakness was disclosed 05/07/2007 with php.net (Website). The advisory is available at pear.php.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2519 since 05/07/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25428 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : php-pear (MDKSA-2007:110)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34482), Exploit-DB (30074), Tenable (25428), SecurityFocus (BID 24111†) and OSVDB (42108†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
