Linux Kernel up to 7.0.3 mm folio_free stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.3. This affects an unknown part of the component mm. Such manipulation of the argument folio_free leads to stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-46277. No exploit exists. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0.3. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component mm. The manipulation of the argument folio_free with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/zone_device: do not touch device folio after calling ->folio_free() The contents of a device folio can immediately change after calling ->folio_free(), as the folio may be reallocated by a driver with a different order. Instead of touching the folio again to extract the pgmap, use the local stack variable when calling percpu_ref_put_many().

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-46277 since 05/13/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 06/08/2026).

Upgrading to version 7.0.4 or 7.1-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 85be0a262e39c706edb53c88af8afde2e98222ba/39928984956037cabd304321cb8f342e47421db5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
