Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Red Hat Directory Server and Enterprise Linux. This issue affects the function create_masked_entry_string of the file auditlog.c of the component 389 Directory Server. Executing a manipulation can lead to heap-based overflow. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-11792. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Directory Server and Enterprise Linux (affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function create_masked_entry_string of the file auditlog.c of the component 389 Directory Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A heap buffer overflow flaw was found in 389 Directory Server. When audit logging is enabled, the create_masked_entry_string() function in auditlog.c copies a fixed-length password mask into a precisely-sized heap buffer without checking available space. If a short cleartext password is logged (requiring non-default CLEAR password storage or a compromised replication peer), the copy overflows the buffer, corrupting heap memory and audit log output.

The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-11792 since 06/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/09/2026).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
