Details
A vulnerability was found in SQLite up to 3.53.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function fts5LeafSeek of the component FTS5 Page Data Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
SQLite before 3.53.2 contains memory corruption vulnerabilities in the FTS5 full-text search extension that allow attackers to cause process crashes, memory exhaustion, or arbitrary code execution by supplying a crafted database with malformed FTS5 page data. Attackers can trigger an out-of-bounds read in fts5LeafSeek() via an attacker-controlled loop bound and a heap buffer overflow write in fts5ChunkIterate() through a crafted continuation page causing an integer underflow, exploitable when an FTS5 MATCH query is executed against the malicious database.
The weakness was presented by Ashish Kunwar. The advisory is shared for download at sqlite.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-11822 since 06/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 3.53.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
