Vmware Spring Data REST up to 5.0.5 SpEL Expression expression language injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Vmware Spring Data REST up to 3.7.19/4.3.16/4.4.14/4.5.11/5.0.5. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component SpEL Expression Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a expression language injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-917. The product constructs all or part of an expression language (EL) statement in a framework such as a Java Server Page (JSP) using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended EL statement before it is executed. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Spring Data REST is vulnerable to SpEL expression injection through map-typed properties when processing JSON Patch (application/json-patch+json) requests. When a persistent entity exposes a Map-typed property, the JSON Pointer path segment used as the map key is embedded directly into a SpEL expression without sanitization or validation. Affected versions: Spring Data REST 3.7.0 through 3.7.19; 4.3.0 through 4.3.16; 4.4.0 through 4.4.14; 4.5.0 through 4.5.11; 5.0.0 through 5.0.5.

The advisory is shared at spring.io. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-41729 since 04/22/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 3.7.20, 4.3.17, 4.4.15, 4.5.12 or 5.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
