Details
A vulnerability was found in image-size up to 1.2.1/2.0.2 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component HEIF Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
image-size through 2.0.2 contains a denial of service vulnerability that allows remote attackers to permanently block the Node.js event loop by supplying a specially crafted image buffer with a zero-valued size field in a recognized box-type. Attackers can trigger an infinite loop in the JXL or HEIF image parsers by providing a crafted image containing a box with a size of zero, causing the offset to never advance and permanently hanging the application.
The weakness was presented by Joshua Rogers. The advisory is shared for download at joshua.hu. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-71329 since 06/10/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
