cerebrate up to 1.36 add params dynamically-determined object attributes

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in cerebrate up to 1.36 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function add. The manipulation of the argument params with an unknown input leads to a dynamically-determined object attributes vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-915. The product receives input from an upstream component that specifies multiple attributes, properties, or fields that are to be initialized or updated in an object, but it does not properly control which attributes can be modified. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Cerebrate before version 1.37 contains a mass-assignment vulnerability in the generic CRUD add path. The add() handler attempted to remove an attacker-supplied id from $params before normalizing the request through __massageInput(). Because the normalized $input could still contain an id field, a user able to reach an affected add endpoint could supply an identifier that should have been server-controlled. Successful exploitation could allow creation of objects with attacker-chosen identifiers, potentially causing unauthorized data manipulation, object spoofing, inconsistent references, or disruption through identifier collisions, depending on the affected model and endpoint permissions. The issue was fixed in v1.37 by removing id from the normalized input before entity patching.

The weakness was presented by Jeroen Pinoy as aff1ca707c8f926d00cda3deb39ff9bf59cdf18e. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-53901 since 06/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 1.37 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch aff1ca707c8f926d00cda3deb39ff9bf59cdf18e is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-36216). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
