Details
A vulnerability was found in Logitech VideoCall (affected version not known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function Start in the library vibecontrol.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in ActiveX controls (1) VibeC in (a) vibecontrol.dll, (2) CallManager and (3) ViewerClient in (b) StarClient.dll, (4) ComLink in (c) uicomlink.dll, and (5) WebCamXMP in (d) wcamxmp.dll in Logitech VideoCall allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (browser crash) and execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was published 06/01/2007 by Will Dormann as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2918. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5435.
