A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in OCaml-tar up to 3.3.x. This affects an unknown code block of the component Decompression Endpoint. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-23. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize sequences such as ".." that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. In OCaml-tar before 3.4.0, a crafted archive with ../ path segments in its name allows escaping the current working directory. This is not desired behavior, and tar(1) rejects such extractions, but ocaml-tar decompresses it anyway. The impact is that it allows arbitrary file writes outside of the desired extraction directory (to an attacker that can reach a tar decompression endpoint).
