Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.25.4 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The (1) sys32_mremap function in arch/sparc64/kernel/sys_sparc32.c, the (2) sparc_mmap_check function in arch/sparc/kernel/sys_sparc.c, and the (3) sparc64_mmap_check function in arch/sparc64/kernel/sys_sparc.c, in the Linux kernel before 2.6.25.4, omit some virtual-address range (aka span) checks when the mremap MREMAP_FIXED bit is not set, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) via unspecified mremap calls, a related issue to CVE-2008-2137.
The weakness was released 05/27/2008 by Jan Lieskovsky with Linux Kernel Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-6107 since 02/10/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 37337 (Ubuntu 7.10 / 8.04 LTS / 8.10 : linux, linux-source-2.6.22 vulnerabilities (USN-751-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48710), Tenable (37337), SecurityFocus (BID 33836†), OSVDB (56163†) and Secunia (SA30258†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-46587. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
