Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Daniel Stenberg c-ares up to 1.3.2. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Random Number Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
c-ares before 1.4.0 uses a predictable seed for the random number generator for the DNS Transaction ID field, which might allow remote attackers to spoof DNS responses by guessing the field value.
The bug was discovered 06/08/2007. The weakness was disclosed 06/08/2007 by Amit Klein (Website). The advisory is shared at cool.haxx.se. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3152 since 06/11/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27676 (Fedora 7 : c-ares-1.4.0-1.fc7 (2007-0724)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34979), Tenable (27676), SecurityFocus (BID 24386†), OSVDB (37171†) and Secunia (SA25579†). The entry VDB-37218 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
