A vulnerability was found in VMware Player up to 2.0.3 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. Untrusted search path vulnerability in vmware-authd in VMware Workstation 5.x before 5.5.7 build 91707 and 6.x before 6.0.4 build 93057, VMware Player 1.x before 1.0.7 build 91707 and 2.x before 2.0.4 build 93057, and VMware Server before 1.0.6 build 91891 on Linux, and VMware ESXi 3.5 and VMware ESX 2.5.4 through 3.5, allows local users to gain privileges via a library path option in a configuration file.
The bug was discovered 06/04/2008. The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2008 with iDefense (Website). The advisory is available at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-0967. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1574 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 800006 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115824 (VMware Security Update (VMSA-2008-0008 and VMSA-2008-0009)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
