Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in SUSE libzypp up to 16.22.18/17.38.12. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-24. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize "../" sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
A path traversal in handling the "path" component of .repo files processed by libzypp before 17.38.13 in the 17.x series, or before 16.22.19 could be used by attackers to fill directories on the system outside of the zypp cache with content.
The weakness was shared by Michael Andres. The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.suse.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-44942 since 05/08/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/18/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Upgrading to version 16.22.19 or 17.38.13 eliminates this vulnerability.
