Tor up to 0.1.2.1 Alpha-cvs information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Tor (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Tor before 0.1.2.14 can construct circuits in which an entry guard is in the same family as the exit node, which might compromise the anonymity of traffic sources and destinations by exposing traffic to inappropriate remote observers.

The bug was discovered 05/25/2007. The weakness was presented 05/25/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.seul.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-3165 since 06/11/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27726 (Fedora 7 : tor-0.1.2.16-1.fc7 (2007-1674)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 0.1.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34560), Tenable (27726), SecurityFocus (BID 24180†), OSVDB (35670†) and Secunia (SA25415†). See VDB-3225 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
