Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Canonical Microceph up to 19.2.3+snapcf306793a3. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the file /var/snap/microceph of the component Remote-Import API. Executing a manipulation can lead to path traversal. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-10720. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Canonical Microceph up to 19.2.3+snapcf306793a3. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file /var/snap/microceph of the component Remote-Import API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-23. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize sequences such as ".." that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Canonical MicroCeph versions from the squid and tentacle track are vulnerable to a path traversal issue in the remote-import API. Holders of a trusted cluster mTLS certificate (such as enrolled cluster members) or join token can manipulate files in an imported remote cluster within the /var/snap/microceph confinement. This would allow daemon disruption and pollution of the cluster state.
The weakness was presented by Owais Lone. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-10720 since 06/03/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Upgrading to version 19.2.3+snapcf306793a4 or 20.2.0+snapbe4e67380e eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
