Red Hat Enterprise Linux/OpenShift Container Platform heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift Container Platform. This issue affects some unknown processing. Executing a manipulation can lead to heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-12725. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift Container Platform (unknown version). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

A heap-based buffer overflow was found in dnsmasq. When DNSSEC validation and query logging are both enabled, logging of DS or DNSKEY replies containing unsupported algorithm or digest types can cause dnsmasq to write past the end of an internal logging buffer. A remote attacker able to supply such a DNS response may crash the dnsmasq process, resulting in denial of service.

The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-12725 since 06/19/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/23/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 321969 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-12725), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (321969) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-38278). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
